Bedfordshire U15s Rugby Trials

The County rugby trials for the under 15’s were hosted for the first time by the Dunstablians at their Bidwell Park ground in Houghton Regis

.
There were over forty young hopefuls competing for around twenty five places, players from Luton, Biggleswade, Ampthill, Stockwood Park and the Dunstablians took part in the trials together with members of the School of Rugby and players that had previously played for Bedfordshire in the lower age group.

Ian Marshall told the hopefuls “In the past there have been a number of Bedfordshire players selected for the East Midlands Under 15’s side and it is here that players should push hard to be selected for an England side.” He also said “that if they were unlucky on this occasion to be selected, that there would be other opportunities as East Midland selectors are often out and about watching games at club level”

Bedfordshire’s first game is scheduled for 10th February v Oxfordshire U15’s, the game to be played away at Chinnor RUFC

A pupil at Lark Rise School, Dunstable has been one of the first to receive an RFU award as a youth volunteer.

Kettering Festival - Minis show great promise

11 Oct 2009

Kettering Mini’s Rugby Festival (under 7’s,8’s,9’s,10’s,11’s,12’s)
11th October 2009

Despite fielding a largely inexperienced team the under 10s led the way for a successful day for Dunstablians at the Kettering festival of rugby. Wins over Kettering,10-0, Olney25-20 and a 20-0 defeat against Rushden & Higham were enough to secure a semi-final berth for the young Dees. Coach Andy Merkl re-introduced 3 more experienced players for the semi against a well organised Old Northampton team, this paid dividends as the Dees were comfortable 15-5 winners to set up a return with Rushden in the final. Despite going a try behind the Dees came back strongly and were unlucky to have a try disallowed on half time. The second half saw the Dees pour forward and the equaliser soon came, the Dees thought they had won it when Daniel Fitt went over in the last play of the game only for the ref to rule the try out for a dubious forward pass. With the scores level, 5-5 at the final whistle, competition rules stated that Rushden were to be awarded the trophy courtesy of what happened in the group stages. Coach Andy Merkl said " considering the number of new and inexperienced boys we had playing, today was a fantastic achievement and very promising for the future".

Both the under 8s and the under 9s were narrowly beaten in the semi finals, both teams losing to strong Old Northampton teams.

Despite the under 7s and under 12s not getting out of the group stages it was overall a good day for the young Dunstablians with some very promising talent on show.

U16's Matthew Anderson in Street Athletics Grand Final

Oct 2009

Street Athletics was founded in 2005 by Lindford Christie and Darren Campbell. This year, Street Athletics visited 20 different venues around the country seeking out the best raw talent. No runners are allowed to use spikes or blocks. This resulted in a Grand Final held in Albert Square, Manchester, on Saturday 26th September featuring Bedford Modern School Year 11 student, Matthew Anderson, who lives in Houghton Regis, Dunstable.

"I was taking part in athletics at Stockwood Park, Luton, and was told about Street Athletics by my coach. Basically, Street Athletics gives young people opportunities, which do not have the equipment or chance, to take part in athletics for whatever reason. I qualified at a local event in Luton on 23rd July, finishing in the top three, which meant I had qualified for the National Final," said Matthew.

Several hundred young athletes took part in the Final with two runners up in each age group winning a year's supply of Nike sportswear and the opportunity to receive personal training sessions from Lindford Christie and Darren Campbell.

"At the National Final, I came second in the Second Heat of the U17 category 60m sprint, which meant that I qualified for the Semi-Final. I finished fourth in my Semi Final, which meant an agonising wait for the other times to see if I had done enough to qualify for the Final."

Matthew was unlucky not to obtain a place in the Final having just lost out to the top six fastest times. "Each competitor was issued with a t-shirt to race in bearing the Street Athletics logo and the name of the town in which entrants had originally raced to qualify. Different towns had their names in different colours and I represented Luton, which was in purple.

"I play rugby at BMS and for Dunstablians Rugby Club and I am sure that the athletics training that I undertook during the summer has helped to increase my fitness levels, speed and stamina for rugby. I am in the U16's/Year 11 Rugby Team and have recently also played for the 1st XV, where I played alongside Sixth Form students, although I am only in Year 11 at the moment," added Matthew.

"Looking back, it was a good experience for me, doing something that I had never done before and it has made me more determined than ever to go back next year and get to the Final and win," said Matthew.

Rob Hardwick, Director of Rugby at BMS said, "Matthew has made big strides in the last year and this has shown with his Street Athletics and also his selection for the First XV. I am sure Matthew will be one to watch out for in the future."

We are always looking for new youngsters to come and join in or even parents to get involved in what is a family based club with good rugby traditions. RFU President (2007), Bob Taylor

19 Sept 2009

Dunstablians were highly honoured to have Bob Taylor, ex- RFU and East Midlands president, join us for the 1st XV’s game against Wellingborough on Saturday 19 September.

.

Bob Taylor is a former England and British Lions flanker, who played at the very highest level. He then went on to dedicate his spare time to the administration and management of the game at all levels

He played in all four Lions Tests' in South Africa in 1968 and captained the England/ Wales team against Ireland/Scotland at Twickenham when the RFU celebrated its Centenary in 1970.

Bob won 16 England caps, playing flanker or Number 8. His first England match was against Wales in 1966 and his last against France in 1971. He coached Northampton for five years, was a member of the East Midlands Coaching Panel and from 1981 – 85 was a referee for East Midlands.

At Dunstblians Bob witnessed an exciting game but was not totally impartial as he was a school master for 31 years and taught Maths and PE at Wellingborough Grammar School.

Bob Taylor said: "I am a strong believer that rugby is the best team game in the world, with the scope to satisfy all who choose to play".

Reece Marshall captained the Saints team that also included Josh Taylor, Richard Cobb and Clarke Davis.

Lewis Jones and Josh Skelcey would also have featured but were both away on holiday.

A highly entertaining game against a strong Saracens team ended in a narrow defeat for the Saints 33-34.

The club can feel very proud of these boys - well done to them all.

Under 13s - Success on the Continent

May 2009

Dunstablians U13s took part in the Luxembourg 10s International tournament over the May bank holiday.

The format of the game is slightly different abroad, the matches being played on a half size pitch, with consequent shorter offside lines, and a non-contested scrum.

Ds entered two teams, an "A" and a "B". The "B" team played with excellent spirit and played some very good opposition including Boyne A, a very strong team from north of Dublin. They eventually ended in a creditable 9th spot, ably led by skipper Ryan "Tank" Cunnington.

The "A" team began their campaign well with a convincing win over Boyne B. Lewis Taylor starting as he meant to go on with a strong running display. After an easy win over local team Walferdange, they came up against one of the tournament favourites in Strasbourg A. After a scoreless half in which Ds were forced to throw their bodies at much bigger opposition, the deadlock was broken by Lewis Taylor followed by a well worked try for Billy Wagstaff. With time running out, Strasbourg's patience snapped as Charlie Burnett pounced on a loose kick to score and seal the game. Strasbourg retaliated with a free-for-all punch up. Ds ran out eventual winners of the match, and of the fight!

The final pool game was a one sided affair against a weak Dutch team from the Hague. Ds were through to the semi-final where they came up against the biggest team in the competition, RTOC of Holland. RTOC are the elite, Dutch academy, a school of excellence for players of exceptional talent. Ds were dwarfed by the sheer physical presence of the Dutch but their match against Strasbourg had stood them in good stead.

Thanks to some outstanding bravery by Jarrad Jerome and Josh Klymysyn plus strong tackling from the rest of the team, Ds held out wave after wave of powerful running and even managed a few runs of their own, but RTOC were disappointed as the game ended scoreless and it was announced that their would be a drop-goal shoot out. With an intense atmosphere the tournament stopped to watch and Luxembourg TV were on hand to witness a nail-biting finish to a classic game that saw Ds go through 5-4 on drop kicks.

The final was an anti-climax in comparison and an exhausted Ds side did their best to hold out to a rampant team from Henley and finally capitulated in the dying minutes by two tries to nil.

Ds, the tournament runners up, ended up with superb statistics of 18 tries for and until the final had not conceded a try. They came of age, playing some of their best rugby of the season and were rightly praised by all of the organisers and opponents. Both teams are to be warmly congratulated on a fantastic tour and for giving their parents and coaches a lot to be proud of.

Under 7s & Under 12s - ST NEOTS FESTIVAL WINNERS

26 April 2009

A well earned victory for Dunstablians under 7s

A team of ten boys travelled to St Neots on Sunday 26 April for the Annual Festival of Rugby held there.

Drawn against some old foes in their half of the tournament, which is made up of ten teams from each age group, the boys from Dunstablians saw off opposition from Biggleswade, Olney and Huntingdon. Losing only to Peterborough in the first round their points and tries scored were enough to take them through to the final against home side St Neots.

A nail biting final saw the scores tied at four a piece, however it was the bonus points earned by tries scored, and the fair play points awarded, which saw Dunstablians boys win through to claim victory in this last match of the season. Giving them overall victory in their age group at the festival.

The squad: Marcus Merino, Declan Haughian, Thomas Bodsworth, Alex Bonney, Oliver King, Charlie Millard, Mitchell Harding, Iestyn Hopkins, Alfie Herman and Saric Lewington.

Man of the match, with an impressive fourteen tries, was Declan Haughian.

Also another well earned victory for Dunstablians under 12s

The U12’s were also the winners of the St. Neots Festival for their age group, a great end to their very successful season.

DUNSTABLIANS' UNDER 13's WIN THEIR LEAGUE

22nd MARCH 2009

Dunstablians' U13s have achieved the feat of winning Herts & Middx league 5 at the first time of asking.

They did it in style on Sunday and maintained their unbeaten league record with a maximum 45-0, bonus point win over Fullerians.

The win crowned an impressive first season in the HML leagues, overcoming such illustrious names as Ealing, Saracens and Wasps. The final tally reads P6 W6 F186 A15. Only twice did D's Under 13s fail to register bonus point wins. Their nearest rivals Ealing, surprisingly stumbled in their penultimate game at the weekend going down to Wasps, and with one more game to go for Ealing, Ds can do no worse than winning the league by 7 points, and it could well be a whopping 8.

The boys now have a well earned week off before they take on local rivals Leighton Buzzard in a fortnight, hoping to go a little better than a 17-all draw in their last encounter.

On a personal note, the most pleasing aspect of their wins is the favourable comments from oppositions' parents/coaches on the impeccable behaviour and attitude of the boys as they climb the ladder of junior rugby. Congratulations to all the boys, parents, managers and coaching staff.

Alex Burnett
Head coach

DUNSTABLIANS RECRUIT NEW COACH

Dee’s have recruited a new coach following the unexpected departure of Chris Greenslade.

Richard Pell will be taking the reins as 1st Team Coach with immediate effect as Chris took the once in a lifetime opportunity to emigrate to New Zealand with his family.

‘Pelly’ has a vast rugby pedigree with a distinguished playing career with Leicester Tigers and Rugby Lions. Following the end of his 12 year playing stint at Rugby Lions his hand turned to coaching the same side in National League One.

Richard’s career direction forced him away from coaching only 2 years ago but he is keen to get back into the saddle and Dee’s provided him with the perfect opportunity as they aim to return to Midlands One rugby next term.

Dee’s Chairman Graham White said ‘It is an asset for Dee’s to have recruited a coach of Richard’s quality and experience that should take Dee’s forward this season and into the foreseeable future. His task is not an easy one having only taken control two weeks before the first league fixture but he has responded extremely well to the challenge. Losing Chris (Greenslade) was an obvious set back but the club have acted quickly to ensure there was no loss in continuity’.

Below Richard is pictured with Chairman Graham White, Club Captain Damian Daize and 1st Team Manager James Marchant

When lightning struck - memories of DRUFC from a French exile

‘Sixty burly rugby players were playing with noisy gusto’ -

- so ran the headline in The Sunday Express. Dunstablians RFC had hit the headlines in the national press!
Well, I suppose as we ran four teams, sometimes five, we did have 60 players, but burly they were not, in fact a good percentage were pulled out of the pubs to make the numbers up.

The Express story was the result of an incident on a training night, and certainly sixty players never graced the only one pitch we had, although as the total lighting consisted of just three, occasionally working, halogen lamps they would have been difficult to count anyway.

The Sunday Expresses’ 'sixty burly rugby players' were training on a dark winter’s night when out of nowhere came a bolt of lightning [yes, in winter!] and the boys were knocked off their feet. Consternation reigned! Brian Gabriel, the first on his feet, and renowned for his ability to consume alcohol, rushed into the bar and suggested he should take out a quantity of ale to help the stricken recuperate. His suggestion, while being recognised as humanitarian, was rejected by the treasurer. On hearing that there would be no beer forthcoming the cream of Dunstable’s youth arose from their prostate positions in the mud and went into the bar.

A dozen phone calls were received from the press over the next few days all of which wanted the minutest details of the story, and depending on who picked up the phone, the event got enlarged and turned into a national tragedy. People who had only popped in to use the toilet, and hadn’t been in the club for months, became overnight heroes as their names were added to the list of the stricken
The first team captain at the time was Alan Copley, and on the afternoon of the paper’s publication his brother phoned from Yorkshire to ask who this guy ‘Noisy Gusto’ was, with whom the boys had been playing.

As a result, until only a few years ago, when certain people were doing the match report, and had no idea who had got the points, they were awarded to En Gusto. The sports editor of the Dunstable Gazette was told he was Venezuelan. But eventually he realised that if En Gusto was a real person he must be approaching the age when he would be playing from a bath chair and refused to print unless the report was accurate.

This is a true story. Oui, c'est vrai!
