disappoint with his after dinner speech and the day
was topped off with an emphatic win by the 1st XV (results).

VPs' Lunch
1st November 2008 - report and pictures
On
Saturday 1st November, 75 VPs and their guests plus
officials from Syston RUFC sat down to an excellent
pre-match lunch, presided over by Jim Power (as
you will see if you look carefully at the picture
below)
Judging
by Steve Carline's despairing pose and the drooping
head of Grahame Bennett, this picture was taken
during the Chairman's ramblings!
After
the lunch, Ross Barrington thanked George Sandifer
for his part in founding the club and George and
fellow founders, Jim Hamilton and Trevor Turvey
were made Honorary Life Members of Dusntablians.
George thanked the club on behalf of Jim and Trevor,
who were unable to attend the lunch.
The
chaiman welcomed Charlie Nissan, who joined Dunstablian's
VPs this season, after a 10 year, distinguished
playing career at No. 8 in the 1st XV, which included
Dee's two trips to Twickenham in 2000 and 2007.
Charlie
responded by saying how much the club means to
him, especially having met his wife through the
club and he felt it significant that his daughter
was born on the 10th anniversary of him joining
the club. He reminisced about his enjoyment of
'murder ball' during the training sessions, which
he said seemed to suit his character!.
Geoff
Chiddley, a longstandng VP, very kindly stepped
up as the main speaker for the day. Complete with
pith helmet he entertained us with wit, anecdotes
and repartee.
A
very sincere thank you to Geoff for providing
such amusing after lunch entertainment.
The
day was made extra special by Dunstablians beating
Syston 17-6 and despite the atrocious weather
both sides played their part in generating an
exciting contest. See match report for details.
After
the game the draws were made for the raffle and
also for the lucky winners of the two pairs of
tickets for the Internationals being played at
Twickenham on 15th and 22nd November.
Finally
the Man of the Match awards were presented to
Ben (Nick Nack) Murphy for Dees and Chris Page
(centre) for Syston.

Saturday
20th September - Start of 60th Season Celebration
Pictures by John Chatterly
Start of the 60th season celebrations at Dunstablians
RUFC - 20th September 2008
Perfect weather, perfect match results and a large
crowd, including members from the Dunstable School Old
Boys' Association, meant that the 60th season at DRUFC
got off to a fantastic start yesterday.
Jimmy Hamilton, John Bryant,
Steve Carline
and George Sandifer
The day commenced with pre-lunch drinks enjoyed by
many Old Dunstablians, officials and members from Ampthill,
our own club members and their guests. Just before lunch
everyone went outside to witness the official unveiling
of the Anniversary clock, marking the 60th year since
the founding of the club and 120th year since the founding
of Dunstable Grammer School, now Ashton Middle School.
The anniversary clock has been generously donated by
the Dunstable School Old Boys' Association (DSOBA) and
it was an honour and a privilege to have two of the
founder members George Sandifer and Jimmy Hamilton present
to mark the occasion. John Bryant, chairman DSOBA, delivered
the speech prior to the unveiling in which he paid tribute
to the late John Reason, who was the founder of Old
Dunstablians Rugby Club. Steve Carline, our President
responded expressing our sincere thanks.
It was great to see the club room full to capacity
for the lunch and even the speech from our new chairman
Graham White couldn't diminish the enjoyment and excitement
in anticipation of the match, in spite of his best efforts
to put the diners to sleep!
This special day for Dunstablians was also chosen,
most inappropriately by our 2nd row 1st team player
Byron Odell and Sarah, now Mrs Odell, as their wedding
day. However, in spite of his father Steve having to
go back to Milton Keynes to pick up his trousers which
meant the wedding ceremony did not start until 2pm,
Byron and best man Gerhard Swart arrived in the nick
of time 4 minutes before the start of the game and were
changed out of their top hat and tails into their playing
strip in time to run out for the kick-off. Sarah and
the rest of the wedding party arrived shortly after
the kick-off by courtesy of our club sponsors Three
Star Coaches.
The match against local rivals Ampthill was one of
the most thrilling, nail-biting contests ever experienced
at Bidwell Park with the home side clinging on to become
deserved winners in spite of having to play for nearly
75 minutes with only 14 men. Click here
to see the result and full match report and 'photos.
Man of the match was Joe Murphy.
After the game Sarah and the wedding guests joined
the victorious team on the pitch for 'photos and the
celebrations on the field of play were rounded off with
Byron and his bride walking arm-in-arm down the guard
of honour provided by his fellow team mates. The wedding
party left soon afterwards to continue their festivities
at the Old Farm Tottenhoe again courtesy of Three Star
Coaches.
After the raffle, match sweep-stake (first prize £50
won most fittingly by George Sandifer, 2nd prize won
by Steve Rowe, 3rd prize won by Paul Chant) and Prompt
Payment Draw (first prize £50 won by Pete Cain and 2nd
prize, lunch at the next home game for two, won by Dave
Molloy) celebrations continued in the members' lounge
well into the evening.
With all of the other senior sides winning their games,
this was truly a special day in the history of Dunstablians
and a superb kick-start to our 60th anniversary season.
A great time was had by all.

As promised
Bank Holiday Sunday at Dunstablians was
A DAY FILLED WITH FUN FOR EVERYONE
Seven teams took part in the
keenly contested “It’s a Knockout"
competition. The coveted trophy was won by 'Tuffen's
Toughnuts' led by, the only lady team captain, Lynn
Tuffen. Congratulations to Lynn and her triumphant team!
There were other side shows
and attractions including Bouncy Castle, Jousting, face
painting, coconut shy and cake stall. The all day bar
and food from Dunstablians
world famous barbequeprovided ample
sustenance for the daytime
crowds and suffcient energy for many to remain late
into the night for the
Disco.
The report for the Dunstable Gazette read as
follows:-
Club members of all ages joined in the fun at Dunstablians
rugby ground at Bidwell Park to enjoy a fantastic Bank
Holiday Sunday Bonanza.
The day was designed to bring all sections of the club
together and centred around an “It’s a Knock-out”
style competition. Teams were made up from senior, academy,
junior and mini rugby players as well as other members,
families and friends. The essential requirement of all
participants was for them to make complete fools of
themselves and none of the team members disappointed
the spectators. The frivolous nature of the games however
did not diminish the will and determination of the teams
to take the whole occasion very seriously and strive
for victory in every event.
The games had interesting names such as: Wheelie Challenging
(involving pushing a tractor tyre through the brook
that crosses the ground); Ski Sunday (skiing with at
least two members of the team on each plank) and various
other obstacle course races. Large quantities of water
featured in many of the events with copious drenching
of opponents.
As well as the main competition there was a bouncy castle,
jousting, face-painting, cake stall and a coconut-shy,
ensuring that there was entertainment for all.
James
Ellershaw playing by his own rules!
The whole day was extremely well organised
and was a credit to the many club members who worked
hard before, during and after the festivities to make
it a great day for all who attended.
It would not be possible to thank everyone
individually for what was a fantastic team effort but
a special thank you to Mark Jabri who was the overall
organiser and to Jon White who designed the games and
made up the rules.
The presentation of the “It’s a Knock-out”
trophy took place in the clubhouse after the games and
the fun day was rounded off in style with a disco.
Chairman Graham White said, “It was great to
see so many members from all sections of the club enjoying
themselves. It has been a huge success and an event
that I hope will become a highlight in the club’s
annual calendar”.

Sporting Dinner in the company of Sir Henry Cooper OBE KSG!
Dunstablians Rugby Club were proud and privileged to
be able to welcome a sporting legend to Bidwell Park
on Wednesday 4th June in the person of Britains’
very own Sir Henry Cooper OBE KSG as it’s celebrity
guest of the evening for a very special Sporting Dinner.
In a Heavyweight Boxing career spanning 17 years Sir Henry fought 55 times, winning 40 of these fights, many inside the distance.
He held during his illustrious career, the British, Empire, Commonwealth and European heavyweight titles and Sir Henry was the only heavyweight to win the coveted “Lonsdale Belt” outright.
Sir Henry’s main weapon was his left hook. It was this punch that gained him the distinction of being the first man to put Cassius Clay on the floor, just before he became world champion. This left hook, nicknamed “Henry’s Hammer” was calculated as being delivered on landing with the force of nearly 3 tons!
This fabulous evening also saw the welcome return of
celebrity comedian Adger Brown, as our MC and host.
The 250 guests enjoyed an excellent meal and wonderful
entertainment and many went home bearing a signed photgraph
of Sir Henry standing over the prone Cassius Clay, a
memento of an historic event and a memorable evening.
DUNSTABLIANS
RUFC SPORTING DINNER
On Tuesday 13th November 2007 Gareth Chilcott, a
legend in the world of Rugby Union, joined the members,
supporters and sponsors of Dunstablians Rugby Club for
a fabulous Sporting Dinner held at the Chiltern Hotel,
Waller Avenue, Luton.
Fresh from his Radio 5 and TV commentating at the Rugby World Cup Finals, Gareth brought his hilarious brand of comedy and factual rugby stories to the Dunstablians for the first of this seasons sporting dinners.
Compering the evening was Adger Brown, one of the funniest men on the after dinner circuit. The cockney comedian and TV personality entertained over 150 guests with his incredible personal brand of humour.
Peter Davis, the Dunstablians Commercial Director, said It was a fabulous evening and a springboard for future social and fundraising evenings, the auction, raffle and Irish bingo raised around £6000.

UNDER 8'S SQUAD

Our under 8 squad enjoyed a memorable
day at Twickenham on the 15th September2007 when they
entered a London Header Tag Festival. Playing four matches
against teams from Wasps Harlequins and Saracens, winning
2, drawing 1and losing1 match which saw them just miss
out on the final.
They can be seen here as a squad, getting ready to travel
on the first team bus and also enjoying a view of "Headquarters"
